Why Forgetting Is Normal (And When to Worry)

You walk into the kitchen and stand there, blank, with no idea why you came in. You're introduced to someone at a party and their name evaporates before they finish saying it. You spend ten minutes hunting for the car in a parking garage. As we get older, these moments can feel less like minor annoyances and more like quiet alarms — the first cracks in something we'd rather not lose.

Here's the reframe that changes everything: forgetting is not a malfunction. It is one of the things a healthy brain is supposed to do. As Durham University memory researcher Alexander Easton puts it, forgetting is "an entirely normal part of memory — enabling us to move on or make space for new information." Our memories were never built to be a perfect, permanent recording. They were built to be useful. And usefulness requires letting go.

Forgetting Is a Feature, Not a Bug

Attention Is the Real Gatekeeper

Most everyday forgetting traces back to that first stage. We simply weren't paying attention when the information came in. The dinner-party name vanishes because, at the exact moment it was offered, you were focused on shaking a hand, scanning the room, or rehearsing your own introduction. The encoding never happened.

The fix isn't a better memory — it's better structure. Easton points to a beautifully simple example: always putting your keys in the same place. By building a habit, you remove the need to encode the location at all. You'll never "forget" where the keys are because you never have to remember. The most reliable memory systems are the ones you build outside your own head — a consistent spot for your keys, a calendar you actually trust, a notebook, a single inbox. Offloading is not cheating. It's how attention gets freed up for the things that matter.

Use It or Lose It: The Forgetting Curve

In the 1880s, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus ran one of the first true memory experiments — on himself. He memorized lists of nonsense syllables and tracked how quickly he forgot them. The result, now known as the forgetting curve, is one of the most replicated findings in psychology: without rehearsal, most of what we learn fades within a day or two.

You've lost the precise location but kept the gist, which narrows the search from the whole lot to a small corner of it. Your memory didn't fail. It compressed.

Why Memory Changes as We Age

It's true that forgetting becomes more pronounced as we get older. But more forgetting does not automatically mean something is wrong — and understanding why is genuinely reassuring.

The longer you live, the more experiences you accumulate, and the more those experiences overlap. If you've taken one beach holiday in Spain, you'll recall it with crystal clarity. If you've taken fifteen, separating the trip where your brother came along from the one where it rained all week becomes genuinely hard. As thousands more documents arrive, folders blur together, things get filed in two plausible places at once, and retrieval slows down — not because anything is lost, but because there's so much more to search through. An older brain holding decades of overlapping memories is doing a harder job than a younger one, and a bit of slowdown is the expected cost.

It's also worth saying plainly: forgetting a name or a date doesn't mean your judgment is going. Older adults often carry deep knowledge and well-honed intuition that more than compensate for the occasional retrieval lapse. A momentary blank is not the same as a decline in thinking.

When NOT Forgetting Is the Problem

The clearest proof that forgetting is healthy comes from what happens when it breaks down in the other direction. In post-traumatic stress disorder, a memory refuses to fade — it stays vivid, intrusive, and disruptive, replaying itself uninvited and hijacking daily life. The problem isn't a weak memory; it's a memory that won't let go.

Something similar shows up in grief and in depression, where negative memories can become sticky and hard to release. In these cases, the ability to forget — to let an experience soften and recede over time — would be a mercy. It's a powerful reminder that the goal was never a perfect memory. The goal is a balanced one: holding what serves us, releasing what doesn't.

When Forgetting Is Worth a Conversation

All of this normalizing comes with an important counterweight. Sometimes forgetting genuinely is an early sign of something that deserves attention, and knowing the difference matters. The distinction isn't really about how much you forget — it's about what kind of forgetting it is.

Red flags worth raising with a doctor

  • Asking the same questions over and over. Forgetting a name because you were distracted is an encoding hiccup. Repeatedly asking a question you've already had answered suggests the information isn't being held at all — a different kind of problem.
  • Getting lost in very familiar places. Misremembering directions somewhere new is ordinary. Struggling to navigate a neighborhood or building you know well points to a deeper difficulty using everyday cues.
  • Forgetting how to do over-learned tasks. Blanking on a dinner guest's name is normal. Forgetting how to use a knife and fork is not. When the how of familiar actions starts to slip, it's worth a professional look.
  • Changes others notice before you do. When friends or family begin pointing out lapses that you yourself aren't aware of, that's a meaningful signal worth taking seriously.

Aerobic movement in particular is one of the most consistently brain-protective behaviors we have.
